Recovery and Wellness Event

As mentioned in our previous post, Silver Lake Support Services will be hosting a Recovery and Wellness Fair on May30th at our treatment facility.
This is an open event and all are welcome to attend. We are encouraging residents of the Staten Island community with concerns about their neighborhood, friends, family or coworkers to attend this event for educational materials, counseling, an open forum for discussion and increased awareness.
According to an article published by the Staten Island Advance in 2010, "pain medication overdoses killed more Staten Islanders than car crashes or murder...with the Island once again topping the rest of the city in per-capita prescription painkiller deaths."  Prescription drug abuse among young adults continues to plague our community, with incident rates rising.
The Staten Island District Attorney's office will be joining us at this event to demonstrate ongoing legal support for individuals involved in prescription drug dispensing and sale and offer some insight on the status of our community at present.
We will also be joined by The You Can Do It Yoga center and co-owner of that establishment, Denise Danton-Nizzare. Denise is a Yoga, Meditation and 12-step facilitator with both a personal and professional understanding of addiction. Denise will offer some breathing and guided meditation techniques for all who attend.
Our staff will be available at the event to provide complimentary behavioral health screenings, brief intervention/counseling and Q&A on our program and treatment approach. Refreshments will be provided to all who attend.
This is an excellent and important opportunity for individuals struggling with addiction or mental illness in silence, families affected by addiction and providers and community leaders committed to a healthier Staten Island.
Please feel free to contact us for more information, questions or comments. Thank you all. We look forward to meeting you!
